pi-hindsight

Long-term memory for the pi coding-agent, backed by a local Hindsight instance: a durable memory of your project that survives sessions and context compaction, searched and injected before each turn (recall), distilled and stored in the background — never blocking the agent — when context is about to be discarded (memorize).

[!TIP] Need Hindsight running first? On macOS the fastest way to a local instance (v0.8.4+ recommended) is hindsight-setup — simple and quick.

What a session looks like

Every shot here is the real widget, rendered by the shipped code. Recall's survivors arrive as a small untrusted-reference block in the turn's context; the write happens off to the side — the only trace of either is this line changing. The /mem panel (alt+h) covers status, settings, review and history; its Status tab shows which config file is which:

The arrows (recall) and (retain) are bright while both contours are on and go dim as soon as either is off. The recall block

The widget line is only the summary; this block is what recall injects into the turn's context. The examples are the real output of the shipped formatter (bun scripts/widget-shots.ts recall-block-hit and siblings — never typed by hand):

The --- end of recalled memory --- line is the fence that lets the extension tell injected memory apart from the rest of the transcript. When nothing survives, the tail collapses to Injected facts: none (recalled facts judged irrelevant); at a task boundary the deep pass injects one synthesised briefing instead of loose facts:

With too little context for a standalone query the block instead opens with - Bank query: not sent plus the reason, and a due bank reminder rides below the fence as this block's tail — at most one memory block is injected per turn.

The two banks

Memory lives in a project bank and, optionally, a shared user bank. The project bank holds knowledge about the repository you are in — decisions and their rationale, constraints, verified know-how, pitfalls; the automatic write path, the hindsight_retain tool and per-turn recall all work against it. The user bank holds standing facts about the person, true in any repository — how you like to work, your tools, your prohibitions. Enable it with userBankId (or HINDSIGHT_USER_BANK) and the agent gains a dedicated write tool, hindsight_retain_user — the only path that can reach the user bank: the automatic pipeline is wired to the project bank and structurally cannot touch it.

The user block in the system prompt

What the user bank knows can be placed straight into the agent's instructions: put a marker in an AGENTS.md the agent already loads and the extension replaces it with a <user_profile> block built from the user bank. Three forms exist (single-line and multi-line spellings produce identical bytes):

The block is frozen byte-for-byte for a whole epoch — session start and a completed compaction are the only two boundaries. The reason is cost: the provider caches the system-prompt prefix, and content that changed between turns would invalidate that cache on every turn and multiply the price of a long session several-fold. So a fact written now appears at the next boundary — the widget's fragment (gallery above) tells "deferred" from "broken".

[!NOTE] A marker is a note addressed to the extension, not to the model. One selector only; a marker with anything unparsed is refused whole, and a parsed marker that cannot be answered (no server, empty bank, a model still generating) is removed from the prompt rather than left in it. Your file is never edited — you are warned once per session instead, and a block built at an earlier boundary survives a failed one as a stale cache.

How it works

Recall (read path). Before each turn a cheap model distils the message plus recent context into a few standalone bank queries, runs them in parallel, judges the hits for relevance, and injects the survivors verbatim — capped at recallMaxLines, de-duplicated against what the session already saw. At a task boundary a detector triggers a deeper pass: one coherent briefing, not bullets.

Memorize (write path). Fires on compaction, on /mem-save, and as a safety net when a session quits. Extract, merge, verify, bank-aware dedup, store — all inside the extension via isolated model calls: no agent turn, no context pollution. Every write carries a deterministic document_id, so a retried write upserts instead of duplicating. What gets stored is facts only, never invented: goals, decisions with rationale, constraints, verified know-how, pitfalls, non-obvious locations — never code diffs, raw tool output, chatter, unexecuted plans, or secret values (only where a secret lives). Each candidate is kept only if a future agent knowing it would act differently, and all memory is written in one configured language, so the same fact never exists in two tongues.

Letting a fact die

A bank that only grows eventually asserts things that stopped being true, so the write path may retire a bank fact (factInvalidation, on by default) — but only an orphan that consolidation can never fix, such as a duplicate or a fact about deleted code, and only with a verbatim transcript quote as evidence, re-checked in code before the kill. A failure here never costs the write itself. Every kill is auditable: /mem → Log shows it as a ↓ … retire row with the quote that condemned it, and pressing u on that row puts every fact the entry killed back into the bank and into recall — one keypress, row-granular — while a restore entry is appended to the log so the history stays honest. Set HINDSIGHT_FACT_INVALIDATION=0 if you would rather your facts never die.

Review (/mem → Review tab)

Every stored document also lands in a global review queue, and the Review tab walks the pending ones: approve, edit (re-stored under the same id, replacing the old facts), or delete. An entry nobody touches for 7 days is approved automatically (reviewAutoApproveDays; 0 keeps everything pending forever) — safe, because the document was already stored in the bank the moment it was enqueued: approval leaves the bank untouched, and delete is the only action that removes anything. In the review log, an entry without a name means a person ended the review; expiry or auto means the machinery did.

Install

pi install npm:@abix5/pi-hindsight

You need pi, bun, a running Hindsight HTTP API, and one small model in your pi registry for both pipeline roles. Installing registers the extension (pi.extensions); set your models once in the global config, declare a bank in the project config, and /reload.

[!NOTE] Without a project bank the plugin stays dormant — no recall, no widget — so it is safe to keep installed globally: it only wakes in projects that declare a bankId. Open /mem → Status to confirm the connection.

Where config and state live

Config merges three layers, later wins: env defaults → global file → project file. Edit the global file for infrastructure shared by every project and the project file for what belongs to one repository — or let the /mem Settings tab write each preference to the right file for you.

After an upgrade, the first session prints the release notes for every version you have not seen into the chat — once per version, and never into the model's context.

Everything else — fact categories, recall effort and budgets, model fallback chains, missions, the task detector — has sensible defaults and is edited in the /mem Settings tab.

Keep memoryLanguage in agreement with the server, which has its own two language switches: HINDSIGHT_API_LLM_OUTPUT_LANGUAGE forces the language of all LLM artifacts the server produces, and HINDSIGHT_API_TEXT_SEARCH_EXTENSION_NATIVE_LANGUAGE sets the PostgreSQL full-text-search dictionary (default english — a Russian bank must set it, or Russian facts are never stemmed and full-text search under-recalls). The extension cannot verify the agreement: GET /v1/{ns}/banks/{bank}/config returns no language key at all, so keeping the three settings in agreement is left to the reader.

The agent itself gets hindsight_recall, hindsight_reflect, hindsight_retain, and — with a user bank — hindsight_retain_user. For spawned agents that must stay silent, the --mem-only-tools CLI flag registers the tools and nothing else: no widget, no hooks, no automatic memory.
