README
pi-jambot
JamBot Search for pi — gives your coding agent a
search_jambot tool backed by the JamBot news/web index. Fresh, real-time results for
current events, news, sports scores, prices, weather, and anything that changed after
your model's training cutoff.
[pi] ──search_jambot()──> api.jambot.com ──> merged general + finance indexes
Requirements
- pi coding agent
- A JamBot API key — get one at https://app.jambot.com
(demo key
sk_live_demoworks but is rate-limited to 50 queries/day)
Install
Option A — package install (recommended)
# From the downloaded tarball:
tar xzf pi-jambot-<version>.tar.gz
pi install ./pi-jambot
# Or from npm (when published):
pi install npm:pi-jambot
Option B — single file (manual)
Copy the extension into your global extensions directory:
mkdir -p ~/.pi/agent/extensions
curl -o ~/.pi/agent/extensions/jambot.ts \
https://app.jambot.com/downloads/pi-jambot/extensions/jambot.ts
Then restart pi (or run /reload). Note: use Option A or B, not both — otherwise
the tool registers twice.
Configure your API key
Either export it before starting pi:
export JAMBOT_API_KEY=sk_live_YOUR_KEY
Or put it in a key file (recommended — survives reboots):
echo sk_live_YOUR_KEY > ~/.pi/agent/jambot-key
chmod 600 ~/.pi/agent/jambot-key
Optional: JAMBOT_API_URL overrides the API base URL (default https://api.jambot.com).
The tool
search_jambot(query, limit?, from?, to?, topic?)
| Param | Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|
query |
string | Search text |
limit |
int | Max results, 1–20 (default 10) |
from |
string | Date-range start, YYYY-MM-DD (inclusive) |
to |
string | Date-range end, YYYY-MM-DD (inclusive) |
topic |
string | finance routes to the finance-only index |
Returns a JSON array of {title, url, snippet, date} with HTML stripped.
Example prompts that trigger it:
- "what's in the news about the dolphins?"
- "search jambot for nvidia earnings"
- "any bills news from the last week?"
Using JamBot with other AI tools (MCP)
JamBot also ships a standard MCP server for editors/agents that speak MCP (Claude Code, Cursor, opencode, zed, Open WebUI):
claude mcp add jambot --env JAMBOT_API_KEY=sk_live_YOUR_KEY \
-- python3 /path/to/jambot_mcp.py
See https://app.jambot.com/downloads/README.md for MCP setup details.
