README

pi-zero

Free model provider for Pi Coding Agent. Free models are automatically discovered on startup.

Features

  • No local server — no port binding, no proxy process
  • No API keys — upstreams don't require authentication
  • Dynamic discovery — fetches available free models from upstream APIs on startup
  • Dual upstreams — OpenCode Zen and KiloCode gateway
  • Resilient — one upstream failure doesn't block the other

Providers

Provider Source Auth
pi-zero-opencode OpenCode Zen No API key required
pi-zero-kilo KiloCode No API key required

Discovery & warnings

On startup, pi-zero fetches the free model list from both upstreams in parallel.

  • If an upstream is unreachable or returns an error, you'll see a yellow Warning in pi:
Warning: [pi-zero] KiloCode model discovery failed (network error).
  • If an upstream responds but has no matching free models, you'll see:
Warning: [pi-zero] OpenCode Zen model discovery returned no free models.
  • The other upstream is unaffected — you can still use whichever providers loaded successfully.
  • Start the server or restore your network connection, then run /reload to retry discovery.
  • If both upstreams fail, the extension still loads but no models are available. You'll see warnings for each failure, and /model won't show any pi-zero-* providers until discovery succeeds.

Upstream caveats

Free models are provided by third-party upstreams (OpenCode Zen and KiloCode). Expect variability:

  • Availability — models may appear, disappear, or change without notice
  • Rate limits — free tiers may throttle or reject requests under heavy use
  • Model lists — available models change over time as upstreams update their catalogs

Install

pi install npm:pi-zero

Usage

pi

After startup, use /model to cycle through available providers. Free models from both pi-zero-opencode and pi-zero-kilo appear automatically — no extra configuration needed.
